Move aside OLPCs and Intel Classmate PCs, there is a new cheapo notebook in town. For a mere US$98, Chinese manufacturer HiVision is offering a Linux-based laptop, the NB0700, which makes even Netbook buyers look like big spenders.

HiVision makes the worlds cheapest Linux laptop at $98 using a new cheaper MIPS based processor (perhaps the Longsoon or the Ingenic), WiFi, 1GB flash storage, it runs Linux, has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out, voice-chat, skype, multi-tabbed Firefox browser support and Abiword for word processing. Automatic and secure online software updates. Their current model is running a smooth and pretty snappy Linux user interface.

The Skytone Alpha-400 is a Subnotebook or Netbook with a 7" 800x600 LCD screen. Its measurements are 8.25" long x 5.5" wide x 1.25" deep and it weighs 0.72 kg (1.8 lbs). It is made in China by Skytone, and uses a Chinese Ingenic "Xburst" 400 MHz MIPSII-compatible single core 32-bit System-on-a-chip (SoC) [1] with 128MB of DDR2 memory, and a 1GB solid state drive.


A version of it called the Hivision Mininote is the first Netbook that was announced would be sold to the general public for below $100. [2][3]
